Alkaline Trio

Today I decided to listen to some of my albums from my youth and I had forgotten how great Alkaline Trio’s “From here to infirmary” was. Cover to cover that is just a fantastic listen. I may be biased as this was the first Trio album I ever listened to back in 2003. I still remember the first time I heard Alkaline Trio. It was in my brother and I’s apartment located above Edo Japan in Hub Mall.

Back at It

It has been an insanely busy summer and fall here in the Umrysh household. But good busy, if that is a thing. I hear people say it, so I am assuming it is a thing. I’ve been very fortunate to have more projects to work on than time to work on them. As I approach my first year anniversary of starting my own software development and IT support company I am very excited for what the future will bring.

Leonardo's Brain

I finished reading a book that had been on my to-read list for quite some time. Leonardo’s Brain: Understanding da Vinci’s Creative Genius by Leonard Shlain wasn’t the greatest book I have ever read but it did pose some interesting points that had me contemplating society and life. This was the first book on Leonardo I have read so a lot of what the author had implied was common knowledge was instead fresh and new for me.

Stargate Origins

I found out earlier this week that there had been released a web series set in the Stargate universe. Being a huge Stargate fanboy I had to give it a watch. After having finished it, all I can say is that if I wasn’t so vested in Stargate lore I would not have finished this. It was brutally terrible. The writing and the story itself was so bad. FYI I am going to spoil the story in the following paragraphs.

Tucker and Dale

I decided to take the evening off yesterday and went looking for something to watch on Netflix. After not finding anything new worth watching I decided to re-watch Tucker and Dale vs Evil. What a great movie! It is still one of my favorites for the simple fact it is so unique. A hillbilly slasher flick told from the perspective of the hillbillies. Where the teenagers are the crazy ones terrorizing them.

Mipso

Today the latest album from Mipso was released. I have been listening to them on and off since the summer and was very much looking forward to some new songs to add to the playlist. The album as a whole is very much more of the same, but that is not a bad thing when you enjoy the previous albums. So far my favorite lyrics are from “Didn’t Know Love”:

The big 50

Last month one of my close friends turned 50. I didn’t even realize he was turning 50. I knew it was his birthday but it was like my brain chose to forget that little detail. I must admit, it kind of set me back a bit when I realized it. We have known each other for a very long time but our friendship really started to form around the year 2005 when we had begun working together.

Holden Freemasons

I’m not quite sure how I missed the fact that the Holden Freemason Lodge meets in the upstairs of the Museum building. I’ve walked by this building so many times in my life and never noticed the square and compasses (which apparently says a lot about my ability to pay attention to my surroundings). They also appear to be a fairly active lodge with a Fellow Craft degree being performed this month and a centennial celebration next month.

Wonderfalls

I just finished my every-few-year rewatch of the complete series of Wonderfalls (which really doesn’t take that long as there was only 13 episodes made). It may be hard to believe but even 14 years later I still love this show. I remember watching the first four episodes as they aired back in 2004 and then wondering, where did it go? Only to find out later that they canceled it after just those first four episodes.

Webhook Changes

After sleeping on it I thought it best to revamp the Github webhook that deploys this weblog. There is just something about allowing PHP to execute git commands and deploy to web roots that seems really bad. The original example I had followed to set up the webhook may have worked well for the author but giving PHP that much power really bugged me. I actually had trouble sleeping last night just ruminating about the current set up.
